Tokyo Marathon EXPO 2026 Sustainability RUN CYCLE SQUARE

 

The Tokyo Marathon Foundation’s sustainability event, RUN CYCLE SQUARE,

will be held at Tokyo Big Sight (Tokyo International Exhibition Center) South Exhibit Hall 2F.
At the event venue, you can experience and learn firsthand about our environmentally friendly event operations,

the joy of cheering on runners and our dedication to creating a safe and secure event.
There will be hands-on workshops that people of all ages can enjoy – including collecting/buying back old running shoes,

creating one-of-a-kind cheering items by recycling waste materials, making original Tokyo Marathon sandals

by recycling soles of unsellable shoes and used tires, as well as life-saving education programs.
Bring.  Create.  Learn.  Your action – however small that step may seem – will be the beginning of a new start.

Collection Box for Unwanted Running Shoes: “R-LOOP”

[In cooperation with BOOKOFF]

 

Program Summary:

A new lifestyle of zero-waste.
You’ve stopped using them, but it feels wasteful to throw them away?  Bring those running shoes to the venue.
“R-LOOP” is a collection box designed to give a new life to unwanted items instead of throwing them away.  

Collected shoes will be sent to Malaysia and Kazakhstan and sold for reuse.
Imagine your shoes that you wore to train or to run in events, making their way across the ocean to be reused.  

Won’t you take part in this zero-waste loop?

Running Shoes Buyback

[In cooperation with BOOKOFF]

 

Program Summary:

A new start for a pair that has finished its run.
Do you have running shoes you no longer wear, even though they are still usable?
We will set up a “Shoes Buyback Counter” at the venue.  Advance booking is required.  (No on-site registration.)
Expert staff will carefully check each pair and provide a fair appraisal based on its condition.  

Your shoes will move to the next phase in their life cycle, as they are passed on to a new owner.  

Don’t throw them away—pass them on.  Step into action starting with your pair of shoes.
*Please note not all shoes may be accepted after appraisal.

Let’s Make Recycled Sandals / SHOES TO SANDALS

[In cooperation with NITTOKAKO CO., LTD. / Instructor: Minami Tsuchiya]

 

Program Summary:

Experience the excitement of breathing new life into waste materials - make your very own recycled sandals!
At this workshop, you can recycle soles of unsellable shoes and used tires into original Tokyo Marathon sandals.
While learning how the waste materials can be transformed, you will get to put a finishing touch to the sandals, such as lacing.  

You can then take home the sandals.
Enjoy sustainable craftsmanship that combines environmental consciousness and practicality.

Making a Misanga (Friendship Bracelet) from Unwanted T-Shirts

[In cooperation with BOOKOFF]

 

Program Summary:

A t-shirt that was about to be thrown away is reborn as a one-of-a-kind misanga (friendship bracelet).
At this upcycle workshop, you can create a unique misanga from t-shirts that have been bought by reuse shop but did not get sold.  

It’s simple and easy to make, so people of all ages can participate.
As you weave in your dedication to zero-waste lifestyle, strand by strand, why not seize the moment to contemplate about nature and the future.

Life-Saving Education PUSH: CPR Class

[In cooperation with Life-Saving Education Hero Step]

 

Program Summary:

Do you have what it takes to become a “hero” who can save someone’s life?
During this short, hands-on workshop, you can learn life-saving techniques, such as performing chest compressions (CPR) and using an AED.
Using a special heart-shaped training cushion, “Appa-kun,” you will get to practice CPR and learn proper positioning, strength, and rhythm.
No special knowledge or qualifications are required and we invite everyone—especially children—to participate.
This program can help build your confidence to take action in times of emergency,

as well as offer a life-long lesson, so that you can step up and become a hero.
Your actions today can save someone’s life in the future.

TOKYO MARATHON CREATIVE CAMP
—Let’s all cheer for the Tokyo Marathon runners with handmade upcycled items—

“Tokyo Marathon Art Project” (organized by CEKAI)
Instructor:  Shuto Sakai

 

Program Summary:

Turn scrap materials into cheering power!  Let’s cheer on the runners with our handmade items.
At this workshop, you can create original, sustainable cheering items which can be used on race day (Sunday, March 1st),

using waste materials generated by the Tokyo Marathon (such as course tape, pellets made from recycled clothing, etc.).  

With a little shift in perspective, things you would normally throw away can become treasures.
Parents and children can have fun while learning about the environment at this workshop.  

Let’s make “cheering maracas” and “cheering sign boards” and liven up the Tokyo Marathon together!
